The next time you hear any Republican Party leader talk about how they are champions of the “free market economy” you’ll have every right to call them a liar.
Oh, when it comes to worker safety, increased minimum wage/benefits, or collective bargaining for workers, the GOP is all in. When it comes to regulation keeping corporations from ruining the environment or protecting our health, the GOP wants companies to have free rein. And historically they are never the ones pushing antitrust laws unless the monopoly favors corporations who give big to the Democratic Party.
But the GOP no longer wants companies to operate freely, do they? Harvard University is the most obvious example of the Republicans not only demanding but threatening and bullying a private corporation, indeed the very first corporation ever in United States history, from having any freedom. This is consistent with the Republican war on education at all levels. (Trump and Johnson’s “big, beautiful bill” last week eliminated the Department of Education entirely.)
Even Republican governors are getting in on the action with Indiana’s governor taking full control last week of the state’s largest university’s Board of Trustees, the Board that controls admissions, curricula, and all key positions including choosing the president. And, of course, this was also tucked into the state’s budget bill at the eleventh hour and passed with no public hearings. Open government proponents the GOP certainly isn’t.
Getting back to the Trump regime’s obvious attacks on anything resembling free markets, the demands and threats directed at private industry are relentless. From controlling who they hire and what their internal corporate culture allows to training for new hires, the Republican regime expects full and complete control based on the latest racism-du-jour cloaked in anti-diversity.
Free market economy? Just this past weekend the president ordered a private corporation to eat their tariffs. Amazon having the independence to publish a breakdown for the cost of their goods? Not under today’s GOP. I am leery of posting videos due to copyright concerns, but pull up any video prior to 2025 of any Republican senator, Rubio, Graham, Cruz, with the search word “tariff“ and you will hear how tariffs are a tax on the economy and a direct violation of free markets.
Just like the GOP was the party of candidates with “family values” until it was convenient not to be; was the pro-life party until it came to actually providing welfare, food, and health care to kids; and was the party screaming about voter fraud except in their own elections while ignoring the voter disenfranchisement of extreme gerrymandering and voter suppression laws, the GOP can no longer claim to be free market champions.
