Seismic Musings
It is politically incorrect to compare anyone with Hitler. The dilemma is that there just isn’t much in recent modern history to compare with what is taking place in America other than 1930s Germany. No one with any awareness can deny that the consolidation of power by and through Donald Trump is rapidly making our government become fascist, far-right, and authoritarian, with an ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, and forcible suppression of opposition…which is the literal definition of “fascism.”
But Trump is not Hitler. Hitler was evil. My admittedly non-professional assessment of Donald Trump is that he is not evil. What he is is delusional. He honestly believes the things he says, including the fact that he does not believe he did anything wrong on January 6, or after George Floyd, or with deportations including those of Americans, or with anything else. He believes the photo of Abrego-Garcia was not photoshopped. He believed large swaths of people in Springfield, Ohio were eating cats and dogs.
Hitler was rotten to the core. Trump on the other hand has no core which helps explain why he is simply unable to comprehend the reality of who he is and what he does.
Another key distinction is that Hitler was rabidly anti-Semitic. Trump on the other hand is rabidly racist. He’s got this thing about having it out for non-white people, whether they’re immigrants, Blacks, or Chinese. Why do you think the only major remaining tariff is against China?
And the reality is that Trump is just another symptom of what has been the root of all evil in America, which is racism. Our Founding Fathers were so incredibly visionary and enlightened and downright excellent people in ways never seen before in a collective of men in history anywhere, with one glaring exception: slavery. (Actually two if you include women’s rights, but that was universally messed up, from the framing of Eve onward.)
Racism just never ever ever goes away in our country. Even in the face of the greatest evil the world has ever seen, we didn’t drop an atomic bomb on white people. We dropped it on Asians. There is no way you can convince me that Japan was a greater threat to the United States than Germany.
But older conservatives have had a special place in this country when it comes to promoting racism. It started with the southern Democrats, who are of course today’s Republicans, and they’re brutalizing of Black people for several hundred years. Through the demonization of Muslims by Reagan and unjustifiable wars involving Iraq and Kuwait by Bush to now Trump‘s Muslim bans and reaction to Black Lives Matter, and on and on. It is worth noting that the only president who initiated bombing beyong our borders on white Europeans was Clinton.
Modern Democrats and progressives have faults, but intentionally promoting racism isn’t one of them.
